The party that votes against families
Yesterday, Democrats tried – again – to pass legislation to create ironclad protections for the right to start a family through IVF.
And once again, every single Republican voted against the bill.
If you're wondering why it's even necessary to pass this bill, you're not alone.
Unfortunately, this is the position Republicans put us in after they gutted protections for our reproductive freedoms when they overturned Roe v. Wade. Since then, every facet of reproductive health care has been called into question, and IVF is no different.
Earlier this year, the state Supreme Court in Alabama effectively banned the use of IVF in the state, leaving countless couples wondering if and how they would be able to become parents. At the time, we saw a lot of feigned surprise and furrowed brows from Senate Republicans over how this ruling could have possibly happened – right before they turned around and voted against IVF protections.
In my view, starting a family through IVF shouldn't even be up for debate. But Republicans are hellbent on going after the rights of women and families to make their most intimate decisions free from government intrusion. They have enabled extremists who won't rest until there's a politician in every bedroom and exam room in America.
And where was JD Vance – who always seems eager to share his thoughts about how women should raise their children – for this vote you might ask? He was a no-show, just like he was earlier this year when we voted on my bill to extend the child tax credit and help 16 million kids.
Republicans talk a big game about being "pro-family." Give me a break. These guys are phonies, through and through.
Today is just another sobering reminder of why it's so critical to protect and expand our Democratic majority in the Senate this November.
If Trump and Republicans take control of Congress and the White House, they are sure to keep rolling back the clock on our fundamental rights and freedoms.
We have to stop them in their tracks, and I need your help to do it.
More soon,
Ron
