The fight for data privacy is life-or-death
I've always been vocal about my belief in the fundamental right to privacy. But over the last year, I've been sounding the alarm on my fears that red states will begin weaponizing women's private health data against them in post-Roe America.
The right to data privacy is not a distant threat that hurts a select few. It's a life-or-death issue that impacts every single American.
Since the Dobbs decision, we've seen red states pass more and more egregious laws criminalizing abortion and ripping away Americans' reproductive freedom. And every digital record – even health records – can be weaponized against women who seek out the care they need. More and more, women are being forced to forego the life-saving care they need because of fear of prosecution. Unfortunately, we're already seeing evidence of this happening around the country.
I'm leading the charge in the Senate, urging the Biden Administration to step up and protect women and their reproductive health data against warrantless law enforcement access.
Americans should be able to trust that the information they share in confidence with their doctors when seeking care will receive the highest protection under the law. Reproductive freedom and your right to privacy go hand-in-hand. We should all be free to live our lives and make personal healthcare decisions free of government intrusion.
The fight for reproductive rights is ongoing, and we must attack this injustice from every angle.
More soon,
Ron
