Your mail should be free from government intrusion
Did you know your letters and packages could be under government surveillance?
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service has been tracking senders and recipients of tens of thousands of letters and packages and handing that information over to law enforcement agencies without any court oversight. This surveillance is known as "mail covers."
Mail covers don't provide information about what's inside letters or packages, but they can still reveal deeply personal information about Americans' political leanings, religious beliefs, or causes they support. And moreover, the USPIS is handing that information over to law enforcement agencies without first receiving a warrant.
This is a gross violation of your privacy and First Amendment rights.
You know I've been leading the charge in Congress to protect Americans' right to privacy from every angle, and this is no different.
That's why I'm now leading the effort demanding that the federal government stop collecting this private information and handing it over to law enforcement without a court order.
Americans should be free to live their lives without government intrusion. I won't rest until everyone's right to privacy is protected.
More soon,
Ron
