The Ohio train derailment was preventable – Ron sounded the alarm in 2017
Last month, we saw over three dozen train cars derail in the small community of East Palestine, Ohio. About a third of these cars were carrying hazardous chemicals that were then released into the air, water, and soil. This is nothing short of an environmental disaster, the consequences of which will be felt for generations to come.
For years, Republican lawmakers – funded by the railroad industry and its lobbyists – fought against Obama-era regulations to make trains safer and prevent derailments, until finally, these rules were repealed under Donald Trump. Back in 2017, Ron raised serious concerns that the rollback of these rules would gut safety measures and increase the risk of derailments. Unfortunately, he was proved right.
We need a Congress that will stand up to corporate lobbyists and prioritize Americans' safety over profits.
This accident and those that have followed were preventable. Republicans have repeatedly shown us that they are willing to sacrifice anything, even American safety, to stay in power.
This fight won't be easy. But, together, we can create an America that works for all.
