The right to marry who you love
Yesterday, the Senate passed the Respect for Marriage Act.
This is a big deal.
You may remember that in the wake of the gut-wrenching Supreme court decision to repeal Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas and MAGA-Republicans suggested that the Supreme Court should go after same-sex marriage rights next. But after President Biden signs the Respect for Marriage Act into law, same-sex marriage will be recognized nationwide — no matter what the Supreme Court does.
I was one of the first U.S. Senators to support same-sex marriage, because everyone deserves the right to marry who they love, and today, we protected that right.
Today's victory is yet another example of the important progress we can make with a Democratic majority in the Senate.
This movement, and many more like it across the country, made it clear that Congress must protect LGBTQ+ rights. And we delivered.
Change is coming, and for the better.
