The Supreme Court’s ruling today:
We knew this day was coming, but that doesn't make it any less devastating and disheartening.
An extremist Republican majority on the Supreme Court, put in place by Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell, has overturned Roe v. Wade.
Today’s radical decision will ensure that women in America today have fewer rights than their grandmothers had decades ago. Rights that have proven essential to health, economic participation, and the freedom for women to control their own bodies. We know the anti-abortion movement won’t stop here. Conservatives will now do everything in their power to criminalize abortion.
I am furious and deeply saddened. But I am also determined to fight this in the weeks, months, and years ahead.
Let me be clear: this is the most significant threat to Americans' constitutional rights in a generation.
The next steps are clear, and they're ours.
→ The U.S. House and Senate must immediately try again to protect the right to a safe and legal abortion by passing ironclad protections into law. I believe it is absolutely our duty, and I will do everything in my power to see it done.
→ We must support our allies around the country as best we can, especially in states where abortions are now criminalized and the lives of pregnant Americans are very much at risk.
→ We must also insist that states where abortion is legal pass tough laws to block the judicial and law enforcement agencies in their state from cooperating with states trying to enforce criminal and civil laws against women or their doctors.
I know this is a devastating blow to our constitutional rights and the right to live our lives free of government intrusion. We have a lot of work to do. This is a generational fight, and I'm all in.
