Ending the federal cannabis prohibition

I'm pleased to share with you that legislation decriminalizing cannabis has again passed in the House and is now headed to the Senate.

Ending federal cannabis prohibition is long overdue.

The War on Drugs has been a massive failure, and it has had a devastating effect across America – disproportionally hurting communities of color. Entire communities were upended by racist, wrongheaded enforcement of bad laws.

Every state in the union has felt the impact of these flawed policies, and now voters in states across the country are demanding change. From ballooning prison population to the militarization of law enforcement; when we talk about cannabis reform, we're talking about justice.

I believe that equity and justice have to be at the heart of every conversation we have on this issue, not just because we must do better but also because we need to right the wrongs of the failed War on Drugs.

That's why I'm leading the fight in the Senate to remove cannabis from the federal list of controlled substances, decriminalizing its use. I'm also fighting to expunge past convictions related to cannabis use, saving taxpayer dollars.

Know this – I will do everything in my power to get legislation passed into law that ends federal cannabis prohibition. Our nation must begin to recover, rebuild, and move on from the cruel, racist policies that drove the tragic War on Drugs.

You can count on me to keep up the fight.
