Breaking news: Justice Breyer to retire

Justice Steven Breyer is reportedly planning to retire from the Supreme Court.

Originally nominated to the federal bench by President Carter and then to the Supreme Court by President Clinton, the 83-year-old justice has had a long and distinguished legal career.

The fight to replace him will be President Biden's first chance to steer the course of the Supreme Court. I'm counting on him to nominate a justice who will defend voting rights, women's reproductive rights, civil liberties, racial justice, and equality for all.

We're going to move fast, but we know that Mitch McConnell will try every tactic in the book to delay voting on the nomination until after the November election - remember the Machiavellian tactics he used in preventing President Obama from appointing Merrick Garland?

This means the 2022 election just became even more important. As The New York Times pointed out, "If [Democrats] lose even a single seat in the midterm elections, the balance of power in the chamber would flip, making it much more difficult for Mr. Biden to win confirmation for his nominee."
