50 years of Pride
This is the 50th annual LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. That's an impressive milestone, and I'm proud of the victories the LGBTQIA+ movement has made over that time, from marriage equality to the end of the horrific "don't-ask-don't-tell" policy.
At the same time, we can't lose sight of the Trump administration's ceaseless attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community. Trump's presidency has been one long campaign of stripping away basic rights to the cheers of right-wing extremists.
It's abhorrent that in 2019, LGBTQIA+ Americans can still legally be discriminated against for who they love or how they identify when it comes to something like finding housing or applying for a job.
It's long overdue that Congress take action by passing legislation that will implement ironclad protections against discrimination into law. The House has already taken a critical step by passing the Equality Act. I've joined Senator Merkley to introduce it in the Senate, and now it's time for Mitch McConnell to bring it up for a vote.
This should not be a partisan issue. This is about giving every American equal rights and protections against discrimination.
The LGBTQIA+ movement has struggled for every inch of progress. I'm going to keep fighting until the Equality Act is the law of the land.
It's an honor to fight by your side.
