Big Oil says he's their guy
Today, the Senate voted to confirm David Bernhardt – the ethical catastrophe Trump has chosen to head the Department of the Interior. Bernhardt is wildly unfit to lead any federal agency, especially one tasked with protecting our natural resources and public lands from becoming industrial wastelands.
Bernhardt, a former oil industry lobbyist, is so compromised by the number of former clients seeking to do business with Interior that he has to carry a list of conflicts of interest in his pocket.
Big Oil lobbyists celebrated Bernhardt's nomination, thanks to their close ties to him.
Since Bernhardt began as Deputy Interior Secretary, the DOI has methodically granted his clients' wishes.
And that barely scratches the surface of the ethical cloud now surrounding Bernhardt. Bottom line: like far too many of Trump's nominees, David Bernhardt actively, willfully puts corporate interests above the American people. And he's willing to trample whatever rules, responsibilities, maybe even laws, that get in his way.
I have spoken out against Bernhardt since the day he was nominated, and will continue to fight to hold him accountable to our nation's values, our laws, and our people.
