North Carolina’s poll books problem
In North Carolina, some voters showed up to cast their ballot and were told that they had already voted – but they hadn’t. The electronic systems, known as poll books, also called for some voters to show identification when they didn’t need to.
Remember how Russia meddled in our election to interfere with our democracy? The company that ran these poll books also was the target of a Russian cyberattack.
We don’t know whether these events were linked – but it indicates just how vulnerable our electronic voting systems are to foreign hackers.
The fix? Oregon-style vote-by-mail would leave a clear paper trail for every single ballot. There would be no long lines or suspect poll books on Election Day.
