There are only two sides: Right or wrong.
My parents fled Nazi Germany.
It shook me to my core to see white supremacists and neo-Nazis marching in Charlottesville.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that the radical white supremacist rally-turned-riot in Charlottesville shook us all. The crowd held torches, Confederate and Nazi flags, and Trump campaign signs as they chanted racial slurs and brutally attacked counter-protesters. One woman was murdered by a car driven by a terrorist into the crowd.
It’s a haunting scene that will forever mark American history. How we react is critical.
The president has refused to call this what it is – domestic terrorism. Donald Trump is fueling violent white supremacists by claiming that these events were the fault of “many sides.”
There are only two sides: Right or wrong. The most powerful man in our country has chosen to stand with racists.
I’m thankful for the Americans who came out to counter-protest – to show their neighbors that they are not alone. That we refuse to let racist and bigoted views go unchallenged.
At some point, each and every one of us will be called on to speak out and stand up for what is right in the face of heinous acts. Will we be on the right side of history – or the wrong one?
I know that I’m ready to stand tall and fight back against bigotry and racism. The ugliest side of American and world history cannot be allowed to repeat itself.
