Sign the Petition: Tell Congress to force Trump to release his tax returns
For the past 40 years, it has been tradition that presidential nominees of both major parties voluntarily release multiple years of their tax returns.
They do this to give the voters an objective record to evaluate how nominees have earned their money, what conflicts of interest they would face if elected, what charities they’ve supported (if any), and how they’ve conducted their finances.
Now Donald Trump is threatening to break this 40-year tradition – hiding behind a phony excuse of an IRS audit.
I have introduced legislation that would legally require all major party presidential nominees to make public their tax returns for the last three years.
If enacted, this legislation would amend the Federal Election Campaign Act to require public disclosure of the last three years of a nominee's tax returns. And if a nominee fails to comply the Department of the Treasury will provide those returns to the Federal Election Commission to be made available to journalists and the public.
Last week Donald Trump offered his third version of a tax plan. We know that the plan favors millionaires and billionaires—like Donald Trump—we just don't know how much he and his heirs would personally benefit from his proposed policies without seeing his tax returns.
It’s time for the Senate to put politics aside and turn this good government practice into law.
Thank you,
Ron
