Sign the Petition: End private prison tax breaks.

Last month, the Justice Department announced it will phase out the use of private prisons for federal prisoners.

This is the right move, and I hope states are taking notice. I’m proud of Oregon for steering clear of private prisons and for refusing to send Oregon prisoners to other states that do.

Mass incarceration in low-income communities feeds a cycle of poverty and crime and does little to keep those communities safe. It’s unconscionable that, through a loophole in our tax code, taxpayers are actually padding the profits of private prison owners who are getting rich off of mass incarceration.
